About Us

The Disciples Divinity House and Institute at Vanderbilt is a partner of Vanderbilt Divinity School and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). We serve as both a scholarship foundation and a learning hub, supporting future and current faith leaders who are committed to making a meaningful impact in the world.

We provide comprehensive support for students, including tuition assistance, housing, student fees, and Assembly participation for Disciples of Christ students pursuing the Master of Divinity. We also offer affordable housing for Disciples of Christ and ecumenical students attending Vanderbilt Divinity School.

Beyond financial and residential support, we cultivate a vibrant learning community that brings together students, alumni, and faith leaders for ongoing connection, formation, and growth throughout their vocational journeys.

What it means to be a House

For nearly a century, the House has been a faithful partner in the education and formation of students at Vanderbilt Divinity School. Rooted in the life and witness of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the House is a place where Disciples students and live in covenantal community with each other and ecumenical students gathering at the table for worship and meals, engaging in study and shared learning, and supporting one another through intentional programming and common life.

The House is more than a building; it is a formative community shaped by grace, hospitality, and belonging. Here, lifelong relationships are nurtured, gifts are affirmed, friendships deepen, and vocations are discerned. In this shared life, our House Scholars wrestle faithfully with God, tradition, and the needs of the world, seeking to follow Christ with integrity and courage.

House Scholars are called to who live and learn together in an intentional community committed to freedom, unity, and a shared call to ministry. The House provides a sacred context in which identity is named, calling is clarified, and faithful leadership is grounded for service in the church and beyond—sheltered in grace and sent into the world.

What it means to be an institute

DDHI’s renewed vision centers on deepening relationships through service and shared leadership. As an Institute, we serve as a dynamic resource hub for pastoral care and leadership formation, committed to nurturing call, sustaining faith, and supporting leaders across every stage of their vocational journey.

Grounded in an ecumenical spirit and shaped by Disciples of Christ values, DDHI serves students, clergy, lay leaders, and congregations through collaborative partnerships with Vanderbilt University, the Christian Church in Tennessee, and congregations in Nashville and beyond. Together, we cultivate denominational and ecumenical spaces for discernment, growth, care, and courageous leadership for the church and the world.

As a resource hub, the Institute will offer:

Learning opportunities that deepen theological reflection and equip communities with sound theology grounded in justice, liberation, and hope.

Peer cohorts and networks that provide mutual support, collaboration, accountability, and continuing education to sustain leaders throughout their vocational journeys.

Public theological engagement that equips communities to address pressing social and cultural challenges, including the Norton Lecture in Preaching and Pastoral Care.
Guidance for those on ordination and commissioning tracks (MDiv and Commissioned), fostering resilience, imagination, and sustainability in ministry as they go through the ordination and commissioning processes.
DDHI foster intentional community through our monthly meals where we check in, offer new information and or announcements, and share theological reflections.
Through our partnership with Vanderbilt Divinity School we offer practical ministry workshops for students there at VDS.  Some workshops are inclusive to community members.
Communal Space for meeting and learning the DDHI will share its physical and virtual space to create community in-person and virtually for growth, discernment, and support.

All programming for current students unless noted.

Upcoming institute workshops to be announced.
